Graduation morning
Confirm your venue from the unit notice. The typical 2026 venue is the indoor Cache Creek Chapel Complex (pew seating); when the unit calls the Polo Field outdoor alternative, pack for bleachers and sun. Seating fills quickly either way.
Oklahoma weather (Sill-specific)
Lawton sits on an open southwestern Oklahoma plain, which means heat, wind, and spring severe-weather risk are all real. Pack for the season your graduation falls in.
Family Day (Thursday, the day before graduation)
On Thursday morning at Sill, the day before graduation, your Soldier gets an on-post pass after the formation. Pack like a comfortable day out. Confirm the exact hours in your unit's graduation letter.

What to leave at the hotel
All vehicles are subject to search at the gate. Leave these items locked in the car or at the hotel before you arrive.
- Firearms and weapons. No personal firearms, ammunition, or knives with blades over 3 inches.
- Outside alcohol. Bringing alcohol onto post is prohibited.
- Large bags and backpacks. Oversized bags may be refused. A small purse or drawstring bag is practical.
- Drones and aerial devices. Unmanned aerial vehicles of any size require written authorization.
- Glass containers. Glass bottles are not permitted at outdoor ceremony venues.

- What items are prohibited at the gate for Army graduation?
- Military installation gates prohibit or restrict several common items, and the simplest rule for graduation week is to leave firearms at home entirely. Fort Leonard Wood asks visitors not to bring privately owned firearms onto post at all, does not allow concealed carry, and bans marijuana in any form (Missouri's state legalization does not apply on a federal installation). Fort Sill requires any firearm brought on post to be registered at the Visitor Welcome Center and transported unloaded with ammunition stored separately. Alcohol is prohibited on most posts outside designated areas. Large backpacks and bulky bags may be searched at the gate or visitor control center. Drones are prohibited without specific written authorization from the installation commander. Knives over a certain blade length (typically 3 inches) are restricted. Check with your specific installation before bringing anything you are unsure about. When in doubt, leave it in the hotel.
- What documents should I carry on graduation day?
- Every adult in your group needs a physical government-issued photo ID: a driver's license, state ID, or passport. REAL ID rules vary by post: Fort Benning scans valid REAL IDs into digital visitor passes at the gate; Fort Jackson waives REAL ID for Family Day and Graduation; Fort Sill and Fort Leonard Wood require a REAL ID-compliant license (gold star) or accepted original supplemental documents and do not accept digital IDs. If your license lacks the gold star, bring a passport as the simplest backup. If you are driving onto post, bring vehicle registration and proof of insurance. Have the unit's graduation letter accessible on your phone or as a printout: some posts use it to speed through the visitor lane on graduation day. Pre-registering at pass.aie.army.mil can cut gate wait time at Sill or provide Benning's optional Special Event path; Leonard Wood generally does not require a pre-obtained pass for a U.S.-citizen same-weekend graduation visit.
- What should I wear to an outdoor Army graduation in summer or winter?
- Check the assigned venue and forecast the night before travel. For an outdoor ceremony, use breathable layers, sun protection, water, and footwear suitable for grass, gravel, and a long walk. For cold or wet weather, add warm layers and a packable rain shell. Indoor chapels, theaters, and field houses may be much cooler than the parking area. Closed-toe shoes are practical but are not presented here as an Army-wide requirement.
- Can I bring flowers or balloons to Army graduation?
- Do not assume balloons are allowed. Fort Jackson's current Hilton Field guide prohibits balloons and signs in the stands because they block views. Other venues can set different rules. A small bouquet may be practical after the ceremony, but confirm the unit's prohibited-items notice before carrying flowers, decorations, or gifts through the gate and into the seating area.
- What should I bring to the graduation bleachers?
- For an outdoor bleacher venue, a seat cushion, water, sun protection, binoculars, and a charged phone are useful. Keep the load small because parking can require a long walk and bags may be inspected. Do not open an umbrella in the stands unless staff permits it; it can block other families. Indoor venues use different seating and prohibited-item rules, so check the unit letter before packing.
