Documents (no entry without these)
Real ID is enforced at all Fort Jackson gates. Bring originals. No photos of IDs.
- Real ID-compliant driver's license or passport★ essential
Every adult attending. Look for the gold star (or applicable state marking) on your license.
- Passport for minors 12+ (birth certificate alone is risky)★ essential
Children under 18 don't need Real ID, but children 12 and older may be asked for a state-issued ID at the gate. A passport is the safest fallback if your child has one. Birth certificate alone has been rejected at some installations — bring the passport if available.
- Vehicle registration + proof of insurance★ essential
Required for any vehicle entering Fort Jackson.
Graduation morning
Hilton Field bleachers fill from the front. Plan for an outdoor ceremony in any weather.
- Foldable bleacher cushion★ essential
Hilton Field bleachers are aluminum and unforgiving. You'll thank yourself.
Find on Amazon → (opens in new tab) - Small blanket / packable warm layer
SC mornings can be 50s even in summer. Easy to shed once the sun hits Hilton Field.
Find on Amazon → (opens in new tab) - Sunscreen + brimmed hat★ essential
The parade lasts ~2 hours; the bleachers face the sun for most of it.
- Compact binoculars
Hilton Field is wide. Even from row 5 your Soldier will be 80+ yards away during pass-in-review.
Find on Amazon → (opens in new tab) - Camera with telephoto lens (or phone with optical zoom)
Phone digital zoom looks terrible from the bleachers. 5x+ optical zoom is the minimum that produces usable photos.
- Compact umbrella
Graduations rarely cancel for rain. Stadium-size umbrellas are not allowed in bleachers; pack small.
- Refillable water bottle (24 oz or larger)
Bring it empty through the gate, then refill at on-post water stations or drinking fountains near Hilton Field. Pre-filled at the hotel works too but plan to refill — it's an all-day event in heat.
Find on Amazon → (opens in new tab) - Portable phone charger★ essential
You'll take 200+ photos. Cell signal at Hilton Field is also weak with 5,000+ devices on it, and your battery drains fast trying.

Family Day (Wednesday)
On Family Day morning, your Soldier gets an on-post pass after the formation. Pack like a beach day.
- Snacks your Soldier has missed (for off-post hours only)
Chick-fil-A, a real burger, candy from the gas station near home, whatever they've been craving. Save these for off-post hours during the day pass — Soldiers can't accept outside food on post. Real food, not energy bars.
- Civilian clothes for your Soldier (if going off-post)
Confirm with the unit first. Some companies require uniform all day. Many families bring a basic outfit just in case.
- Comfortable walking shoes★ essential
You'll walk between bleachers, parking, and the on-post club / DFAC visit. Plan 6,000+ steps.
- Small bills + cash for on-post vendors
Some on-post snack/coffee vendors are cash-only. ATMs exist but lines are long.
Optional but appreciated
- Celebration sign for your Soldier
Cardboard, foam-core, anything visible. Avoid pole-mounted signs in bleachers (blocks views).
Find on Amazon → (opens in new tab) - Tissues
You will need them.
- Lei or small bouquet for the pinning
Family may be invited up at Turning Blue to pin the blue cord. Optional but common.
