Getting to Fort Jackson
From the Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) to a parking space at Hilton Field, in the order you’ll do it. Built for the family flying in for Family Day and graduation.
At a glance
- Rent a car. Fort Jackson doesn’t allow Uber or Lyft on post — you need your own vehicle to enter the gate and park at Hilton Field.
- Gate 2 or Gate 4, both 24/7. Gate 2 is the most common; Gate 4 is the alternate and sometimes faster on graduation morning. Real ID required for every adult.
- Be parked by 6:30 AM Thursday. The graduation lot fills by 7 AM. Family Day (Wednesday) is more forgiving — 8:15 AM is fine for a 9 AM ceremony.
From Columbia Metropolitan Airport
CAE is the airport you want. It’s about 22 minutes from the gate. Pick up your rental at the on-airport counters; every major chain operates there.
We earn a small commission if you book through Discover Cars (no extra cost to you — it helps keep this site free). They aggregate the same chains at the airport.

Pick your gate
Both gates are open 24 hours. Either works; the difference is cumulative wait time on graduation morning.

Most commonly used for graduation. Per garrison guide, Gate 2 or Gate 4 recommended.

Alternate to Gate 2 on graduation morning; can be faster when Gate 2 backs up.
At the gate
- IDs out. Every adult in the vehicle hands a Real-ID-compliant driver’s license or a passport to the guard. Kids under 18 usually don’t need ID; check with the guard if you’re asked.
- Bag and trunk check. The guard may ask to look in the trunk. Keep it tidy and easy to open — it speeds things up. No firearms on post even with a CCW permit; check ahead if you’re traveling with one.
- Vehicle waved through. No pre-registered visitor pass is needed for graduation; the rental agreement is your vehicle credential. Follow signs to Hilton Field.
Parking at Hilton Field
One venue for both ceremonies — Hilton Field. The lot is gravel and grass; sturdy shoes pay off.
Aim to be parked by 8:15 AM for the 9 AM ceremony.
Arrive by 8:15 AM for Family Day at 9 AM. Overflow parking will be signed.
Lot fills by 7:00 AM. Aim for a 6:30 AM arrival — the line of cars stacking into the gate makes the last 30 minutes painful.
Graduation morning fills earlier than Family Day. Aim for a 6:30 AM arrival.
A few rules that catch families out
- No ride-share on post. Uber and Lyft drivers can’t enter the gate. Rent a car or arrange to meet your Soldier off-post during the Wednesday day pass.
- No cell phones in your hand while driving on post. MP enforcement is real. Use a phone mount or your passenger.
- No firearms, no alcohol, no glass coolers. Even with a state-issued CCW.
- Real ID is not optional. Standard licenses haven’t worked at federal facilities since the May 2025 enforcement deadline. Bring a passport if your license isn’t Real-ID-compliant.
