There is no published dress code for families at Fort Benning BCT graduation. Dress for comfort and Georgia weather. What you wear matters less for appearance and more for how you feel after a long morning outdoors.

Graduation Parade
Graduation morning starts early. Aim to be parked by 07:30. Families often dress a notch more formally than the day before, but the garrison does not publish a required dress code.
Expect security screening at ceremony entrances; follow posted instructions at the gate. A simple, easy-to-open bag moves you through the line faster.
Remove hats during the National Anthem and Colors.
Civilians remove hats and place right hand over heart. This is standard ceremony protocol. Just follow the crowd.

Winter: Dec through Feb
Mild compared to northern bases, but mornings can be cold. Avg highs 57-62F, lows 36-45F. A fleece or light jacket is enough for most winter ceremonies; temperatures climb quickly after sunrise. Rain is possible; a compact umbrella covers it.
Spring: Mar through May
Comfortable ceremony weather. Avg highs 70-84F, lows 50-63F. Mornings are cool and pleasant; afternoons warm up fast. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in April-May, so check the 24-hour forecast before you pack.
Summer: Jun through Sep
The most demanding weather window. Columbus GA averages highs of 90-95F with humidity that pushes the heat index well above that. July and August ceremonies are outdoor events in full sun. Light-colored breathable clothing, SPF 50+, a wide-brim hat, and a cooling towel are not optional. Hydrate before you arrive.
Fall: Oct through Nov
Good ceremony weather. Avg highs 70-84F, lows 48-63F. October can swing 20 degrees between morning and afternoon. Bring a layer you can tie around your waist if it warms up. Rain chance drops compared to summer.
Specific items worth packing
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+). Apply before you leave the hotel. Reapply at the parking area regardless of venue type.
- Hat with a brim. A baseball cap works; a wide-brim hat is better for outdoor venues. Both ceremonies last 1-2 hours.
- Even in summer, the early-morning walk from the car can be cool. Tie it around your waist once the sun comes up.
- Small cross-body bag or belt pack. All bags are searched at entry. A simple, easy-to-open bag moves you through the security line faster. Avoid bags with lots of zipped pockets.
What not to wear
The garrison visitor guide prohibits signs, banners, balloons, air horns, and noise makers in the stands. For clothing specifically, there is no published prohibited list, but a few things will make your day harder:
- High heels or open-toe sandals. The walk from parking to the venue can involve uneven surfaces. Comfortable closed-toe shoes are the right call regardless of venue.
- Anything you can’t move in quickly. When Soldiers are dismissed, families rush to the field. A tight skirt or restrictive outfit makes that moment harder than it needs to be.
What to pack for your Soldier
Your Soldier receives a day pass on Family Day and will want to change out of uniform for the afternoon.
For the day-pass afternoon, pack a bag they can grab quickly:
- Casual clothes: jeans or shorts, a t-shirt or polo
- Their preferred sneakers (they’ve been in boots for weeks)
- A phone charger (their phone has been off for the cycle)
- Cash or a debit card (they’ll want to eat off post)
- Any comfort items you know they missed: a favorite snack, a small personal item
On graduation day your Soldier stays in uniform, so the civilian-clothes bag is less critical. They’ll change after the ceremony when the day pass ends.

- Can I take photos at Army graduation ceremonies?
- Yes. Personal cameras and smartphones are permitted at graduation ceremonies and Family Day activities. There are no flash restrictions for outdoor events. You may photograph the parade field, bleachers, and any publicly accessible areas of the post. Do not photograph gate security operations, guard posts, or restricted areas; these are clearly marked. Some posts restrict photography inside specific buildings. Official ceremony photos are sometimes posted afterward by the installation's Public Affairs office.
- What happens if it rains during Army graduation?
- Most Army installations have an indoor backup venue for graduation ceremonies when significant rain is forecast. The ceremony schedule typically stays the same; only the location changes. Common indoor venues include base gymnasiums or large event centers. Check with your specific installation's Public Affairs office for the backup location. Arrive early on ceremony days regardless of weather so you have time to find seating.
- What actually happens during an Army graduation ceremony?
- A BCT graduation is a pass-in-review parade. After an opening narration, the new Soldiers march onto the field by company, render honors, and pass in review before the reviewing officer and the families in the stands. There are remarks from the commander, sometimes a keynote, the national anthem and the Army Song, and a symbolic moment where the trainees are formally recognized as Soldiers. The whole ceremony usually runs about one to two hours. Soldiers are then released to their families for a window of time that varies by post. Bring something to shade yourself and water; even short ceremonies feel long in the sun or an unheated gym.
- Is Army graduation live-streamed for family who can't attend?
- Often, yes. Many Army training brigades live-stream graduation (and sometimes Family Day) on the unit or installation Facebook page, and the video usually stays up afterward so relatives in other time zones can watch on replay. It is not guaranteed at every post or for every cycle, and the stream quality varies. Find your Soldier's specific brigade or battalion Facebook page (the unit shares it in the family letter) and follow it a couple of weeks out. - How many guests can I bring to Army graduation?
- Most Army BCT graduations do not cap the number of family guests. The ceremonies are held in large outdoor parade-field stands or sizable indoor venues built for big crowds. There is normally no ticket and no RSVP for the ceremony itself. What is limited is gate access (every adult needs valid ID), parking (lots fill early), and bleacher seating (first-come). If your Soldier's post or company has an unusual restriction for a given cycle (occasionally the case for indoor or holiday-week ceremonies), it will come through the unit. - Is there assigned seating at Army graduation?
- No. Seating is general admission and first-come, first-served: outdoor bleachers at most posts, or pews/chairs when the ceremony is indoors. - Graduation ceremonies are very rarely fully cancelled. The more common response to weather is a venue move (outdoor to indoor) or a brief delay. Each post has an indoor backup plan: at Fort Jackson the ceremony moves from Hilton Field to an indoor location the training battalion announces ahead of time; at Fort Sill the Cache Creek Chapel Complex is named on every currently published 2026 schedule and serves as the indoor venue when the ceremony moves for weather, though Polo Field remains possible for some cycles, so check your unit's graduation notice for the venue that applies to you; at Fort Leonard Wood the indoor theaters (Nutter Field House, Baker Theater, Abrams Theater) serve the same purpose. Lightning is the most likely weather trigger for a delay. - How many family trips should I plan for Infantry OSUT at Fort Benning?
- Infantry OSUT at Fort Benning is 18 weeks total. The intermediate family event is the Turning Green Ceremony at Week 9-10, marking completion of the BCT portion. Families pin the Army patch on their Soldier and receive a 3-day pass (Friday release, Sunday 2000 return). Then at Week 18 the Turning Blue ceremony (blue cord, Infantry status) is held the day before the Graduation Ceremony. Many families plan only one trip, Week 18, because Soldiers often ship to their first duty station within days of graduation, sometimes overseas. Plan the Week-18 trip as the high-stakes one with a possible deployment goodbye.
- Does my Soldier get spurs and a Stetson at Fort Benning Armor OSUT graduation?
- No. The Order of the Spur (silver spurs) and Stetson presentation are SEPARATE from Armor OSUT graduation. They are earned at the Soldier's first duty station through a unit-conducted Spur Ride, typically a 1-to-4-day evaluation, often months after arriving at the first unit.
