Mobility and wheelchair access
The 100% ID-scan model
Fort Benning runs 100% ID scanning at its gates. If every adult in the vehicle holds a valid REAL ID, the scan itself uploads a digital visitor pass; there is no separate Visitor Control Center stop for that path. To pre-register instead, go to pass.aie.army.mil, select Fort Benning, choose Special Event (not Visitor Pass), and enter the Special Event code for your Soldier’s battalion from the garrison’s Special Events Pass page; approval usually arrives by text within minutes. Non-U.S. citizens cannot pre-register online and must process at the Lindsey Creek Visitor Control Center instead, open 24/7 including holidays, about 5 to 8 minutes per person.
Which gate you need depends on which ceremony you are attending, and the two sides of post are not interchangeable for accessibility planning. Turning Green at Kanell Field uses the Sand Hill Family Day / Graduation Entrance on Custer Road; the garrison’s own live gate page and its own 2024 access-control map disagree on that gate’s exact designation (ACP 5A vs ACP 4), so confirm your entry gate in your Soldier’s unit letter before travel day rather than relying on either published number.
Venue and seating: Infantry off-post, Armor on-post
Infantry and Armor OSUT graduate at different venues with different accessibility profiles. Infantry Graduation is off-post at Inouye Field, National Infantry Museum: no gate entry needed, families drive straight to the museum parking lot, and museum staff direct traffic with golf-cart trams running from the lot to the field for anyone who needs help covering the distance. Armor Graduation is on-post at Brave Rifles Field in the Harmony Church area, the opposite (east) side of post from Sand Hill; gate access and a government-issued ID are required there, served by the 8th Division Road gate (ACP 7), open 24/7.
The museum’s golf-cart trams are the one accessibility feature already publicly documented on either side of post; no equivalent shuttle is published for Brave Rifles Field, so a family attending Armor graduation with a mobility need should budget the full walk from parking and raise accessible seating with the 194th Armored Brigade in advance.
Rideshare option
Uber and Lyft are allowed on post at Benning. If parking proximity is a mobility concern, a rideshare drop-off near the venue may be more practical than walking from a distant parking area. Reserve in advance; on-post rideshare requires the driver to have a permit or pass. Confirm current access procedures with the garrison when you contact the PAO.
Hearing impairments
ASL interpretation
You can request American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for the graduation ceremony, but availability and lead time vary by installation. Contact the Benning PAO to confirm the request process, exact lead time, and interpreter positioning for Fort Benning specifically.
PA system
Graduation ceremonies use a PA system. Families seated closer to the front typically hear more clearly. If a family member uses hearing aids, the ambient crowd noise and loudspeaker feedback can be challenging. Ask the PAO whether an FM assistive-listening system is available.
Visual impairments
Service animals on post
Federal facilities are not governed by ADA Title II. DoD facilities use federal accessibility requirements and local installation policy instead. Contact the Benning PAO before travel to confirm the ceremony-day process for a trained service animal.
A trained service animal does not change the ID-scan or Special Event process: the handler still needs a valid REAL ID scanned at the gate or a Special Event code, the same as every other adult in the vehicle.
Orientation assistance
Ask the unit to name a meeting point and a person who can help with orientation on ceremony morning. If that is not arranged in advance, ask a uniformed Soldier at the venue to contact the unit representative.
If something goes wrong day-of
- Flag a uniformed Soldier or MP. Fort Benning is an active installation with Military Police on post. If a family member has a medical emergency or needs assistance, flag down any uniformed personnel. They can radio for help faster than you can find an office.
- The on-post emergency number is 911. On-post 911 connects to the Provost Marshal Office, not a civilian dispatcher.
How to request accommodations
The practical path is to contact the garrison directly at least two weeks before graduation:
- Contact the PAO. Email usarmy.moore.imcom.mbx.pao@army.mil or call 706-545-5592. Include your graduation date, your Soldier’s company if known, and what you need (ASL interpreter, accessible parking guidance, service animal coordination, etc.).
- Contact your Soldier’s battalion. Unit Family Readiness Officers and Family Readiness Liaisons often manage ceremony-day resources that the PAO line doesn’t directly handle. Your Soldier can give you the contact info for their FRO.
- Do this at least two weeks before graduation. ASL interpreter scheduling, in particular, requires lead time. Week-of requests are less likely to succeed.
- Get a confirmation in writing. Ask them to reply confirming what will be available, where, and when. That gives you something to reference if there is confusion on the day.
- Handle the base-specific access step. If your Soldier is in an Armor OSUT battalion, use the battalion-keyed Special Event code from the garrison’s Special Events Pass page and ask the unit about accessible seating at Brave Rifles Field. Infantry families should ask the National Infantry Museum about its published parking trams and the unit about ceremony seating.

Fort Leonard Wood specifically documents ADA parking near Baker Theater, Abrams Theater, and Nutter Field House; the other ceremony venues need confirmation from the unit or garrison. Bring your valid placard, ask for the exact lot and accessible route at least two weeks before the ceremony, and use the arrival time in your unit letter rather than assuming one time fits every post.
- Can I request an ASL interpreter for Army graduation?
- You can request ASL interpretation, but none of the four garrisons publishes a guaranteed ceremony-wide service or one universal lead time.
