Sunday closures for families arriving Saturday night or Sunday
Mahaffey Museum Complex is closed Sunday. The Old Stagecoach Stop is Saturday-only (April-October) and closed all other days. Bowl Gogi (Korean bowls on Missouri Ave) is closed weekends. Hopper's Pub opens at 11 on Sunday; Agave Azteca, PaPPo's, and the chains on Old Route 66 are open.
Winter graduations (December through February)
January averages 40F high and 25F low at Fort Leonard Wood. February sees roughly 3.5 inches of snow; freezing rain occurs 3-5 times per season. I-44 is maintained but secondary roads can be icy. The Stagecoach Stop is closed in winter. For a winter graduation, the realistic indoor plan is Uranus Fudge Factory (daily, year-round), the chain corridor on Old Route 66, and the Mahaffey Complex on a weekday.
Gate access
The North Gate (Building 100, Missouri Ave) is the main gate and is open 24/7. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license (digital IDs not accepted), vehicle registration, and insurance. Most graduation families need no separate visitor pass. Non-US citizens should email the Visitor Center in advance.
On-post dining for civilian families
On-post dining availability for civilian guests during graduation week is unverified. Do not plan on it; confirm with your Soldier's unit.
Things to skip
- Elbow Inn at Devil's Elbow: permanently closed as of April 2026. Do not send families there for a meal.
- Bulgogi House: permanently closed (Yelp May 2026).
- Applebee's, Chili's, Cracker Barrel on the St. Robert strip: not verified at those exits. Do not send families to a specific address without confirming.

- Can I bring children to Army BCT graduation?
- Yes. Children are welcome at Army graduation ceremonies. There are no age restrictions for attending Family Day or the Graduation Parade. Children under 18 typically do not need their own ID to enter the post if they are with a credentialed adult. Be prepared for outdoor ceremonies with metal bleachers, significant walking, and summer heat (or winter cold, depending on the season). Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and anything else that makes a long outdoor event manageable for kids.
- Is there a dress code for Army graduation?
- There is no formal dress code for family members attending Army BCT ceremonies, but business casual is the widely accepted standard. Avoid shorts, flip-flops, or anything you'd wear to the beach. Graduation parades are formal military events and dressing respectfully is expected. Comfortable closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended: you will walk a lot, parade fields are grass or gravel, and bleachers may require climbing. Summer graduations mean breathable layers; winter graduations can be cold and windy on an open field.
- Can I send mail to my Soldier before graduation?
- Yes, but use only the exact address supplied by your Soldier or unit. Fort Sill's 434th Field Artillery Brigade FAQ says families should wait for the Soldier to provide the mailing address because company and platoon details are required for delivery. Package restrictions and delivery timing are unit controlled, so do not copy an address format from another Soldier or an unofficial group.
- When do Soldiers get their cell phones back?
- There is no Army-wide phone-return schedule. Fort Sill's 434th Field Artillery Brigade FAQ says trainees generally receive weekly phone opportunities, but timing and duration are controlled by the chain of command and can change with training requirements. Family Day and graduation access is also unit directed. Keep your phone available, but do not plan a meetup around an assumed hand-back time.
- How do I find out which Army post my Soldier shipped to?
- Use direct unit communication: your Soldier's orders, the official welcome letter, or the company and battalion information your Soldier provides. Do not infer the training location from a generic return address, a social-media group, or another family's paperwork. If the official documents are unavailable, ask the recruiter or the unit contact named in the welcome letter.
- When will I hear from my Soldier after Family Day?
- Do not expect a call on a fixed schedule. Phone access remains controlled by the chain of command before, during, and after graduation, and follow-on travel can interrupt communication.
